Inquiry: Power Tool!
The most powerful technique for change
Improving your life, removing unwanted behaviours, finding God, finding Who Am I, happiness, innerpeace and joy is a function of two processes.
1. Deepening your inner stillness though meditation in Presence and active practice of being Present in life.
2. Discovering, dissolving or transforming the non-still or non-Present aspects of your consciousness. This is Inquiry as discussed in this site.
To quote one of last century’s greatest Indian sages, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj in the forward to his book I AM THAT. His wisdom was simple, and he applied this ‘day and night’ as often as possible and he fully realised (Abiding Awakening) in only 3 years:
“To know what you are, you must first investigate and know what you are not.
Discover all that you are not;
body, feelings, thoughts, time, space, this or that, nothing, concrete or abstract, which you perceive can be you.
The very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive…” Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Alignment for dissolution through Inquiry
Presence allows things to be so that they dissolve. Inquiry is the powerful tool that brings these behaviours, emotions and beliefs to this place of Presence so they can be transformed into a deeper understanding and greater Presence.
To get the most out of your self-initiated or mentoring sessions, it is assumed you know how to enter the state of Presence (Stillness, Awakened State or whatever you like to call it). If in mentoring guidance will be given on how to enter this state as it pertains to you in mentoring.
The instructions in the online courses where I step you through them so you can learn this process for yourself and change it to suit your own favourite change processes. A version of this is in the Golden Ray Level 2 and Reiki 3 Harth Timeline online courses which steps you through it.
The state of Presence is the most effective place to Inquire and process aspects of your life. When in the state of Presence/Stillness, you will be operating from the place of full consciousness (Awakened) rather than from the state of normal ego consciousness in which humans typically operate.
This small distinction makes the outcome completely different. As you are now Present it amplifies the impact of change in your life as dissolves more layers within you. Once you have used Inquiry successfully from this state of Presence your capacity to hold onto Presence and its Stillness in your daily life will deepen.
The issue that you used Inquiry on will no longer reduce your consciousness down to that limited part that it once did. Instead you will be in full consciousness and thus have a choice about your behaviours and actions. In this place you have access to Presence in all areas and activities in your life.
If Inquiry is done from the mind only the outcome will only be at the level of mind, leaving the emotional levels intact. The mental level will re-fill with the old beliefs again due to the emotional aspect being unresolved. If done at the emotional level without Presence, with lots of crying and catharsis, it will only release at the emotional level. If done in Presence the catharsis leads to full surrender with the resulting stillness or peace where the issue once was. Catharsis without Presence may even embed the emotional trauma even deeper if the surrender has not occurred. Thus Inquiry has to be done from the place of Presence/Stillness so all levels (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual) are integrated at the same time. Without Presence any incomplete layer can re-activate all the other layers.
Another view to Inquiry is that it can be from two places:
1. Presence, which is what you truly are. Thus it embraces all of you.
2. The ego or psychological place, also known as your personality (your “me”), which is limited by your current levels of egoic consciousness.
Inquiring from your personality, the me, who owns things and has opinions, is only a small aspect of what you are. Thus it cannot touch all the layers of your personality and spiritual make-up that constitutes the complete human life form.
This is Inquiry as defined by Adyashanti.
This is where the bulk of your inner garbage can be processed and transformed. The Basic Inquiry method and the Advanced Inquiry method in this site follow the typical path that most healing and counselling paradigms follow. The difference is that with this method the focus is from the place of Presence, Awakened State or Stillness.
Any section given in an 1-on-1 mentoring session where we go into personal material will effectively be dealing with an ego-part of your consciousness: a part being defined in similar terms to how Jungian or Gestalt therapy would define it. This is a locked self-contained aspect that is separated out from the wholeness of your consciousness [see Carl Jung, NLP or Gestalt therapy for parts theory].
As a result, it has limited resources for it cannot tap into the totality of all your consciousness. However these disconnected aspects of consciousness have the remarkable power to hijack your consciousness and result in behaviours and moods that are limited, are not resourceful and feel unpleasant.
